COVID-19: FG warns state against reopening schools, viewing centres

Boss Mustapha

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic has warned states proposing to reopen schools and other activities of mass gatherings to suspend such contemplations.
The PTF also reminded Nigerians that there were still possibilities of a review of all relaxed measures, adding that relaxation of restrictions “does not mean carelessness and that life is back to normal”.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF and Chairman of the PTF, Mr Boss Mustapha, who gave the warning on Monday during the daily press briefing by the task force in Abuja, lamented the continued violation of measures put in place to curb the spread of the virus, including ban on inter-state travel.
It would be recalled that some states of the federation had recently indicated plans to reopen some activities that encourage crowding and mass gatherings.
In this category were Cross River State, which had designed a resumption plan for public schools from June 16, and Kano State, which reportedly announced the opening of football viewing centres across the state, as professional football leagues resume in Europe.
However, warning against decisions such as these, the Chairman of the PTF, in his opening speech, warned that the country was not ripe yet to allow the opening of these activities.
“We have received reports that some states are contemplating the reopening of schools, television viewing centres, sports stadium and other places where large gatherings could take place.
“The PTF re-emphasises that it is not yet safe to do so and that utmost caution should be exercised. The PTF guideline should still be complied with while considering decision of this nature,” he warned.

FG suspend airline, Sanction pilot for flying Naira Marley

BY: OLUSEGUN RAPHEAL:
The Nigeria  Government has suspended Executive Jets Services for flying popular musician Azeez Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley contrary to the approval it was granted.
Naira Marley was flown from Lagos to Abuja by the airline despite COVID-19 restrictions after approval of aviation authorities.
The flight was said meant to fly in Hon. Justice Adefope Okojie from Lagos to Abuja and back to Lagos and not the musician.
It was learned that Naira Marley perform and entertained fun-seekers at the Jabi Lake Mall in Abuja over the weekend.
Speaking on Monday at the daily briefing by members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika announced the suspension of the operation of Executive Jets Service indefinitely for the infraction.
The minister also said the captain who operated the flight would be sanctioned for misleading the control tower.
Sirika said: “Well, we approved a flight but certainly not for any musician. The flight, from the application, was to convey Honourable Justice Adefope Okojie from Lagos to Abuja and back to Lagos for an official assignment.
“In this challenging time, in our wisdom, we considered the judiciary to be part of the essential service to be delivered. Having to move the Hon. Justice from Lagos to Abuja was in order. The approval was given for the 14th of June, 2020, however, we do give them a leeway of 24 hours sometimes due to operational reasons.
“They can operate the flight slightly earlier or slightly forward within 24 hours. In this case, the operator choose to fly on the 13th at about 6:00 pm. So, that itself is not a violation to operate earlier because we gave him the leeway.”
He added: “The operator is Executive Jets Services and the approval was very clear and I will read part of it. This is the letter from the ministry of Aviation to the Chairman of the Executive Jets Services and it was signed by the Director of Air Transport Management on my behalf.”
On the suspension of the jet services, Sirika said: “The operation is a clear violation of our approval to which we take very seriously and it seems this is becoming a norm. Perhaps, this is the second time. So, Executive Air Services operations are hereby suspended indefinitely. We will also fine them maximally according to the law.
“The captain of the flight will also be sanctioned for giving wrong information to the control tower and also appropriately in accordance with our law.
“It seems also that people are not tired of trying our resolve. Well, we are also not tired of rising up to the challenge and living up to our own responsibility for keeping every one of us safe.
“Governance is a serious matter. We don’t take things lightly in civil aviation because it means the lives of people. We are highly regulated, we are international and we are one aviation.
“Going forward, we will put up mechanisms in place or escalate the mechanisms we have in place to detract people from doing so and it means that we will be stricter in our approvals and whoever dares us will meet the consequences.”

The Senior Pastor of Trinity House Church, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, preached on Sunday at a funeral a few hours after his wife, Ibidun die.
His lovely wife died around 2am on Sunday in Port-Harcourt where she was constructing an Isolation centre for the state Government.
But despite his personal grief, Ighodalo proceeded to deliver a short brief at the funeral of a 25-year-old son of Biola Okoya, Adedeji.
In a composed but emotional tone, the bereaved cleric said: “Everywhere tensed, confused frightening and disturbing but here we are today. “I mean if they had told us last week that we would be here to celebrating Ayodeji’s life, I would say it’s not possible. He was ill, no doubt! But, we were believing God that he would be well.
“But, here we are right now and there he is and of course, a lot of you know that I really shouldn’t be here but that’s how life is.”
On his deceased wife, he said: “2 o’clock this morning, I received news that shattered my life but life must go on, and here we are today. So, I have just come to speak to us very peacefully on something I have called Life. Life! Life! Life!
“Life is a deep mystery. There’s no one human being no matter how wise they are like Solomon who can say to you that they fully understand life.
“The Bible says: we see in part; we understand in part, we prophesy in part and he says most of the times we see like in a dark valley but there is going to come a time when we will see clearly as Jesus sees. Life is a mystery and let us accept the mystery of life.
