Oshodi community backs Ipesa-Balogun’s HoR bid

 Hon. Afeez Ipesa-Balogun

The Oshodi/Isolo Local Government community association has assured Hon. Afeez Ipesa-Balogun of its support in his quest for a seat in the House of Representatives, HoR.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the community association, Canon Babajide Otegbade, said the community supports Ipesa-Balogun, a former local government chairman of Oshodi/Isolo Local Government, because of his contribution to the development of the area.
Ipesa-Balogun, an aspirant to HoR under the All Progressives Congress (APC) recently met with the community leaders under the aegis of Community Development Committee (CDC), the umbrella body of all Community Development Associations (CDAs) in the council area, to formally inform them of his intention and to seek their support in the build up to his party’s coming primaries for the ticket of Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency 1.
Reacting to the warm reception, Ipesa-Balogun said he was overwhelmed with the lavish praises poured on him by the people for what they termed his record of outstanding performance, humility, accessibility, maturity and friendly disposition to all and sundry for the period he was chairman of the local government, saying they had not found such in any other that has occupied the office since he vacated it.
The community leaders recalled his landmark projects and compassionate disposition to all and sundry during his tenure as chairman of the council area, and how he strengthened and encouraged the activities of CDAs across the local government area by building and supporting them in all areas.
According to the CDC members, the former council chairman introduced and institutionalised a monthly subvention to the CDC to run its operations, provided space and funded the construction of a Community House, comprising a hall and offices for the CDC to the level it has remained since he left office seven years ago and stood out as the first council chairman in the state to compensate CDAs in the council area, when he released N3.8million to them for successfully monitoring and supervising local government projects across the area under construction to completion. Also, the community leaders, who pledged to give him all the necessary support to ensure that he wins the 2019 election into the House of Representatives once he gets his party’s ticket, recalled that he was the first council chairman in the state to provide a CDC with an official car, stating that the provision of that vehicle by him for them in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area made the apex body of all CDAs in the state, the Lagos State Community Development (Advisory) Council, to write and appeal to all other council and LCDA chairmen in the state to provide official vehicles for their CDCs. Women members of the CDC present also added their voice, stating that under the former chairman, members of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Nigeria, Oshodi/Isolo Local Government chapter, were always sponsored by him to their annual national convention in Abuja but that it has since stopped as they are not able to attend the convention again since he left office.
The CDC members were unanimous in their opinion about Ipesa-Balogun, confident that he will not only make a good representative of Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency 1, if he gets the APC ticket and wins the election.
The aspirant, who was surprised at the encomiums poured on him, was emotionally overwhelmed and only managed as he struggled in between tears of joy to thank the leaders, promising to mobilise funds within a space of time, if elected, to ensure the completion of the CDC Community House to a befitting status.

The event had nearly all notable political leaders in the district, all the members of the House of Representatives in Lagos East District, all local government and local council development area chairmen and their deputies in the district and most traditional stakeholders in the district in attendance.
Also, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly were part of the adoption of Osinowo by party faithful as the preferred candidate for APC in Lagos East Senatorial district.
“Permit me to say it with every sense of humility that with my sixteen years in the Lagos State House of Assembly, I have acquired enough legislative experience to propel me for greater achievement in the Red Chamber (Senate). I have also been actively involved in the political activities of Lagos East Senatorial District for over two decades, and I know where the shoe pinches,” Osinowo said.
Speaking on the declaration, the deputy chairman of APC in the state, Ashipa Kaoli Olusanya, said all APC chieftains in the race must see themselves as ambassadors of the party while seeking the ticket of the ruling party. He begged them all to work with party leaders to ensure a successful conduct of the primaries.
“We want to appeal to all aspirants to eschew bitterness during and after the primary so that we will all support whoever emerges as a winner. We should go to the poll proper as one united family and win the 2019 elections for our party, not only in Lagos, but throughout the country,” Kaoli assured.
The council of traditional rulers in the district, as well as several other organisations and groups were unequivocal in the support for Pepper as the candidate of the party in Lagos East. The traditional rulers said based on Osinowo’s antecedents, they have no doubt that he is fit for the important job ahead.
Former commissioner in the state and a leader in the district, Dr. Tola Kasali, confirmed that the APC will conduct a primary election that will be very transparent and fair to all. “Our party believes in democratic norms. We don’t have any preferred candidate every aspirant will be treated equally,” Kasali assured.

Kofi Annan Goes Home

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday laid to rest in a state funeral attended by African leaders and international statesmen who hailed his record as an advocate for humanity and world peace.
Annan, a Ghanaian national and Noble laureate, died in a Swiss hospital last month at the age of 80.
His body was flown to Accra on Monday for burial in his homeland, where he is seen as a national hero.
Thousands of mourners all over the world filled the auditorium for Thursday’s official
Current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was among the dignitaries in attendance, alongside former Ghanaian presidents, the leaders of Ivory Coast, Liberia, Namibia and Niger, and the Crown Prince of Norway.

In an address, Guterres hailed Annan, who served as the seventh UN Secretary-General between 1997 and 2006, as an exceptional global leader with a deep faith in the role of the UN as a force for good.
“As we face the headwinds of our troubled and turbulent times, let us always be inspired by the legacy of Kofi Annan,” Guterres said.
“Our world needs it now more than ever,” he said.

The ceremony was projected onto big screens outside the auditorium for the crowds of mourners that could not fit inside the venue.
Many commuters in the capital wore black as a sign of respect.
On Wednesday, Annan’s family and Ghanaian dignitaries were among hundreds to file past his casket amid traditional rites by local chiefs and clan leaders.
Annan, a Ghanaian of Ashanti lineage, was granted a royal title by the Ashanti king in 2002.
The elders said the rites, including presenting him with clothing and water, were necessary to clear the path for a peaceful “travel” for their royal.
Some mourners, like New York-based community mayor Delois Blakely, had flown long distances to pay their respects.
Blakely, who served as an ambassador of goodwill to Africa at the UN, told Reuters: “I had known and worked with Kofi for close to 10 years.
He spent his life trying hard to fix our broken society.”
As UN boss he was linked to peace efforts to reunite the divided island of Cyprus, submitting a reunification blueprint which was rejected in a referendum by Greek Cypriots in 2004.
He staunchly opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and later served as the first UN envoy at the start of Syria’s war, but quit after world powers failed to fulfill their commitments, saying: “I lost my troops on the way to Damascus”.

The Governor while addressing lagocian and party faithful who defied the heavy downpour to witness the declaration ceremony in Alausa, Ambode recalled how the journey began four years ago when he called on Lagosians to join him in a journey of selfless service to build a secure and prosperous State driven by a vibrant economy and supported by quality service, equity and justice, saying it was gratifying that the people believed in him and gave their support.
According to the Governor, “In the last three and a half years, I have fulfilled my promises to you to make Lagos work for all. With your support, we have made Lagos a better place and changed the face of our State. I did not do it alone; we did it together, because you believed.
