The association
for Fertility and Reproductive Health (AFRH) Nigeria will hold its eighth
international conference in Lagos this month, with the theme: New Frontiers in Assisted Reproductive
Technology (A.R.T)
Participants
from different facets of medicine will be coming into Nigeria from the United
Kingdom, United States, Asia, Europe and other African countries.
Obstetricians,
gynaecologists, surgeons, embryologists, ultra-sonographers, health regulators,
as well as other support service industries are expected at the epoch event
According
to the local organising chairman of the conference, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, “the
conference will explore the integration of innovative technology in treatment
option being offered by practitioners and impact knowledge to participants from
masters of various fields of specialisation in reproductive medicine.”
Ajayi stated that there are about 12 million
infertile persons in the country which is about ten percent of the total
population, “so to this set of people, any form of access to effective
treatment is priority. It is their valid or legitimate right in a democratic
society like ours to have this right to life’s treatment. Also the Nigerian
cultural background of social isolation for infertile couples has made Assisted
Reproductive Technology (ART) practice in the country pertinent.”
